December 3, 2007
“” There are several theories put forth regarding the place from where the Romans entered Britain and the exact period of conquest of Britain by the Romans. However, it is known that the main force that was invading Britain was led by Aulus Plautius, they started from the port of Boulogne, however this is argued by many historians that since the Romans sailed form East to West, it was necessary that they should have been sailing from the mouth of river Rhine to enter the natural port at Richborough. “”![]() |

The British resistance was led by Caratacus and Togodumnus, who had combined a substantial British force and met the Romans, at a river crossing which is known to be in today’s Rochester, with this battle the British were pushed back to the river Thames.
Plautius was left alone after the death of Togodumnus at the battle on the river Thames, however, Plautius send for help, but there was not much left in the battle. The emperor marched in Britain as a winner, the Romans than went back to Rome, to celebrate and revel in their victory, however, Plautius escaped and carried on his fight for freedom from some other westward state.
The Romans did not stop after this victory, they kept on proceeding westward, and by the end of four years the Romans had already taken control of the southern part of Britain almost from Humber to Severn Estuary.
The governor of Britain started a war against the locals of the modern day Wales and Cheshire Gap, the basic reason was that the Silures of Southern Wales were causing the Governor Ostorius Scapula, problems. He therefore, defended the Welsh country fiercely. After the death of Ostorius Scapule, Aulus Gallus took over the control of the Welsh border country. He was successful in securing the borders of the country, however, he was not interesting in proceeding northwards for any more conquests.
The Romans were not the ones to sit quiet therefore kept on proceeding northwards for further conquests of Britain, after suppressing Boudica. The Romans proceeding from Lincoln to York and here they could from a complete Roman empire since different tribes from the Roman Empire got included in the captured area.
The Romans were unable to capture Scotland because of its difficult terrain and started contructing walls in the captured territory so that they could stay protected, several wall like the Antonine Wall, Hadrian’s Wall, etc were constructed. Though the Romans had penetrated Scotland, their expeditions to the region were only to the extent of hiking, or exploration expeditions and they also tried to bribe the tribes in Scotland to join them and started spreading Christianity.
The wall created by the Romans also is in similar areas as the Hadrian’s Wall. Today there are several examples of the Roman conquest over Britain still studied in British Isles. However, it is not known whether the Romans conquered or interacted in any way with the island of Hibernia. The Romans also help spread Christianity in the region.
