Al Qaeda stop at ski-resort

skiing pakistanCould this be the beginning of the end of the hard line Taliban / Al Qaeda?

The Taliban which is firmly backed by Al Qaeda in Pakistan have stopped all fighting in the Swat valley, which was one of Pakistans only ski resort.

They announced a ten deay ceasfire with Pakistani troops who have met up at the resort.

This area was once a great place for trout fishing enthusiasts before it became over-run by radical militants,

The current strategy of the Pakistani government is to achieve peace through diplomacy with Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders in areas which are heavily controlled by these militant groups.

Pakistan is under severe pressure in this region, were local politicians have had to flee the area such as the head of the Awami National party who had to move to Islamabad due to threats.

Every major ceasefire though with the Taliban has allowed them to re-group such as the ceasfire in the Swat valley in 2008 and the 2006 cease-fire in Southern Warisitan in 2006 which has been blamed on giving the militant groups al Qaeda and the Taliban a stronger position in the country.

How’s your war, Uncle Sam?

Baghdad Under Attacks

Above: US raid on the Iraqi capital Baghdad (Photo: www.thewe.cc)

Okay, so it’s a no-brainer that one of the most powerful nations at present is America and George W. Bush, being its president, inevitably makes him one of the most powerful persons on earth.

At present, the world is having two major wars – in Afghanistan and Iraq. But is this really an inevitable war between or among countries or is it a war that America wanted and started? What exactly is the role of the US in these difficult times?

The planet used to be a better place than its present state, but the 9/11 bombings changed it all. The United States was attacked and hundreds died. It was a carefully-designed terrorist act which gave America sufficient reason to demand for justice.

George W. Bush

Above: How’s your war Mr. Bush? (Photo: www.greenpeace.org)

George Bush was supposed to be on the right track until he insisted on waging war against suspected countries that embrace Bin Laden. Bush initiated War in Afghanistan immediately after 9/11 to dissolve al-Qaeda and its connections, but to this date not a shadow of Bin Laden was found and the terrorist group still operates actively. The Taliban government was overthrown but still remains a headache to George Bush. The reality in Afghanistan continues to haunt and compels us to ask – Did the United States after all achieve its purpose for the War it started in 2001?

To make the situations worse, Bush then engaged in a massive propaganda linking Iraq to al-Qaeda and the country’s weapons of mass destruction. America took its case to the United Nations but to the dismay of George Bush, the U.N. disapproved. Irritated and impatient, Bush and America waged War on Iraq, overthrew its government, captured and executed Saddam Hussein, and eventually missed its purpose. Iraq has become a more hostile country than ever and not a single mass destruction weapon has been uncovered.

Yes, America suffered the 9/11 attacks and hundreds of lives were taken by the merciless terrorist act. On the other hand, we know that many more innocent people died of George Bush’s retaliatory wars – to date, there must be already about not less than 840,000 people that have been killed and over 1.5 million seriously injured in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and the numbers are still on the rise. Now, we simply stare at these two nations paying the price for being not America.

Osama bin Laden Says Israel Fuelled 9/11

Osama bin Laden

Above: Most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden

Osama bin Laden has just released a new message to the world. He vows that al-Qaeda will continue its war against Israel and its Western allies until it liberates Palestine. He also said the fight for Palestinian freedom was the most important driving force behind al-Qaeda’s war against the West; he said that it fuelled the September 11 attacks. The speech is entitled “The Reasons for the Struggle on the 60th Anniversary of the Creation of the Occupation State of Israel.”

“To Western nations … this speech is to understand the core reason of the war between our civilization and your civilizations. I mean the Palestinian cause,” said Osama bin Laden. “The Palestinian cause is the major issue for my (Islamic) nation. It was an important element in fuelling me from the beginning and the 19 others with a great motive to fight for those subjected to injustice and the oppressed,” he added.

“We shall continue the fight, Allah willing, against the Israelis and their allies, in order to pursue justice for the oppressed, and we shall not give up one inch of Palestine, as long as there is still a single true Muslim alive.”

The message was posted on a website forum commonly used by the terrorist group – El Ekhlas – you can search for the site and have it translated so you can view an intro that states: To the peoples of Western, now a new letter of Lion of Islam Sheikh / Abi Abdullah – Osama bin Laden – may God protect him. the picture above is actually a screen shot of the page where the message was posted.

The message lasted for 9 minutes and 40 seconds. The authenticity of the message is yet to be verified. United States monitoring group IntelCenter (a private contractor who has been monitoring al-Qaeda message traffic) said the audio message was posted together with a photo of Osama bin Laden wearing a white robe and turban. It cannot be determined when the photo was taken. IntelCenter said that the message was expected and its arrival was already announced by the al-Qaeda media arm as-Sahab.

He also added that international media has been used to create false stories about “the Jewish invaders, the occupiers of our land, as the victims while it portrayed us as the terrorists.”

“Sixty years ago, the Israeli state didn’t exist. Instead, it was established on the land of Palestine raped by force,” the terrorist leader said. “Israelis are occupying invaders whom we should fight.”

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Arye Mekel was not very happy with the new message saying: “We do not pay attention to the words of this terrorist lunatic. The time has come for him to be apprehended and pay for his crimes.”

It was a timely release. United States President George W. Bush just finished his Israel visit – to which many Palestinians were disappointed. Many of them felt that the Bush government biased towards Israel. The Palestinians marked this 60th anniversary of Israel’s creation with demonstrations and solemn ceremonies – very much in contrast to Israel’s joyous celebrations. Palestinians refer to it in Arabic as “nakba” or catastrophe.

The last message sent by Osama bin Laden was about two months ago, when he urged Muslims to support the recent Iraqi insurgency – saying that it was the best way to show support for Palestine and its people. He also condemned Arab leaders who were supporting Israel’s fight against Hamas and its attacks on Gaza.

Despite a worldwide massive manhunt and a $25 million bounty, Osama bin Laden remains free – free to command his al-Qaeda troops and free taunt his enemies through audio and video warnings issued via the internet.

Therefore one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the most skillful. Seizing the enemy without fighting is the most skillful.” –The Art of War by Sun Tzu

Iraqis Arrest a Man CLAIMING to be an al-Qaeda Leader

Abu Hamza Al-Muhajir

Above: Abu Hamza al-Muhajir

An al-Qaeda member was arrested in northern Iraq – and the arrested man says he is the head of the organization for the entire country.

Major General Abdul Karim Khalaf told Iraqi television network al-Iraqiya that the detained man claimed that he was Abu Hamza al-Muhajir. His captors are still investigating on his true identity as these matters need factual proof. The picture above is a file photo of al-Muhajir.

Abu Hamza al-Muhajir is a Sunni militia leader. According to reports, on June 12, 2006, he was announced on an unnamed Islamist website as the new leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq. This was made days after former leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed from a U.S. air strike only five days before.

The name Muhajir is believed to be a pseudonym. Experts from the FBI and the U.S. State Department does not support the claim that we has named as new al-Qaeda leader. According to their intelligence, the name Muhajir is the pseudonym of an Egyptian militia leader whose real name is Abu Ayyub al-Masri. Al-Masri trained in Afghanistan and was responsible for forming the al-Qaeda’s first cell in Baghdad. There is truth, however, that he was pursued as an aide to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. His identity was confirmed three days after the said announcement of change in Iraqi al-Qaeda leadership.

But a month later, on July 6, 2006, an Egyptian newspaper released a report that Egyptian lawyer Mamduh Ismail claims that Sharif Hazaa, also known in Egypt as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, has been locked up in a Cairo prison for the last seven years running. Other American and Jordanian officials, however, claims that Abu Ayyub al-Masri is not the same person as Sharif Hazaa, and that Sharif Hazaa is actually the pseudonym of a certain Yusuf al-Dardiri. While others claim that all these names are being used by one and the same person.

“He was arrested in Wad al-Hajar region of Nineveh during a raid (Wednesday),” Major General Khalaf said. “Now we are conducting more investigations to confirm whether he is Abu Hamza. The police raided the area and captured the man who said ‘I am Abu Hamza al-Muhajir.’”

The U.S. State Department had posted a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. The man being pursued is a car bomb expert and is surely a member of al-Qaeda. The only problem is that the truth about his real identity has been debated among Iraqi and U.S. military officials. Abu Hamza al-Muhajir translated means the Father of Hamza (the eldest) the immigrant, while Abu Ayyub al-Masri translated means the Father of Ayyub (the eldest) the Egyptian.

Some experts believe that al-Masri carried out attacks in Egypt from the 80s to the 90s, and then later moved to Afghanistan to join al-Qaeda. As an explosives expert specializing in the construction of car bombs, he was a key addition to their movement. Experts believe that he made his way to Iraq from Afghanistan after the March 2003 invasion. While some believe he came earlier in 1999, and met Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in the al-Faruq training camp in Afghanistan where he became an explosives expert.

Should we believe a man who upon his arrest came yelling that his name was that of an al-Qaeda leader? The answer is no. If we do believe that the man named al-Muhajir is the real al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, then this man they just arrested is not al-Muhajir; but then again al-Muhajir could just be a random name given to a non-existent figure that the terrorist group used as the face of the organization for the U.S. military.

Osama’s Deputy Calls for Worldwide Attack

Bin Laden Zawahiri

On Monday, al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri (shown in picture above [right] with bin Laden [left]), who is considered as Osama bin Laden’s second in command, urged Muslims to attack Jewish and American targets worldwide in retaliation for the ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip.

The message was brought through a recorded tape, much like the two earlier tapes of Osama bin Laden who is calling for a holy war on behalf of the Palestinians. In those tapes he also warned of a severe reaction against European nations due to the republishing of the newspaper cartoon of the Islam Prophet Muhammad – which in my opinion is absolutely insane and proves to be a deterrent to peace more than anything else. The editor of Jyllands-Posten is a self-righteous ignoramus!

Anyways, these recent messages are directed at a broader audience. Al-Qaeda is trying to fan the flames, so to speak, of Arab anger against the West; trying to gain further support for their cause which is shared by many. This may mean that they are indeed planning new attacks against the Western countries; or this may simply mean that they are urging other extremists to do what they themselves want to but cannot do.

Al-Qaeda is obviously a crippled soldier. But they don’t need to be present at all battles. The terrorist group does not have a presence in Israel nor in the neighboring territories. This is the reason why most of their sympathizers in the region are asking for support… and this is what they are getting. More than a blessing of sorts, it’s an assurance that al-Qaeda is behind (so to speak) every attack against Israel and furthermore against the West. This is what I think the message is all about and Israel is at the worst end of it all.

Israeli officials are yet to comment on the message. The Israeli assault against the rocket firing squads in Gaza had reportedly killed more than 120 people, many of which are civilians. These attacks were all aired on Arab television.

“There comes a time when you have to back up your words,” said counter terrorist expert and Georgetown University professor, Bruce. “With the increased drumbeat of propaganda … it becomes an element of necessity — if you’re talking so much you have to do something.”

“Perhaps they don’t have the ability to attack the United States, so they may turn to the next best enemy, either Israel or Europe.”

Here is an except from the al-Zawahiri message:

“Muslims, today is your day. Strike the interests of the Jews, the Americans, and all those who participated in the attack on Muslims. Monitor the targets, collect money, prepare the equipment, plan with precision, and then — while relying on God — assault, seeking martyrdom and paradise. Today there is no room for he who says that we should only fight the Jews in Palestine. Let us strike their interests everywhere, just like they gathered against us from everywhere.”

The authenticity of the message has not yet been confirmed. But according to the early reports, the voice resembles that of al-Zawahiri when compared to previous audio and video tapes that has already been confirmed to be from him. The message was posted on a known militant Islamic website. Most of the al-Qaeda tapes are usually released in that said site.

True or not, it is definitely a cause for concern and should not be taken lightly, not only in the West but in other countries as well where Islamic terrorist cells are present — more so Arab nations (like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan), whom al-Zawahiri accused of having a “satanic alliance” with Israel and the West. Al-Qaeda is definitely not dead, and they are once more calling for Islamic armed resistance.

US Embassy in Bin Laden Homeland Attacked

Yemen Mortar Attack
Above: Yemeni soldiers in a checkpoint near the embassy

The US embassy in Sanaa, Yemen was attacked on Tuesday; unfortunately the three mortar rounds hit the nearby school instead of the mission.

13 girls and 3 guards were injured in the mortar attack. Of the 13 students, 3 are in critical condition as of the moment. One guard who was patrolling at the back of the embassy was immediately killed.

Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh said in a statement to the press that the perpetrators are “terrorists.” He offered a hefty reward for any information leading to their capture.

“This ugly terrorist criminal act contradicts the refined teachings of the Islamic religion,” he added. “Terrorist and criminals will not escape punishment …”

US State Department spokeswoman Julie Reside said that, “Our conversations in Yemen have led us to the conclusion that the attack was directed at our embassy.” Although this may have been so, no US personnel or citizen were reported to have been harmed in the explosion.

Yemen is the ancestral home of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Most Western countries consider Yemen as a haven for Islamic militants. But even so, after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States, Yemen joined the US in its war on terrorism. This support for the West had triggered even more militants from their country to surface. Most of the time, they target foreign tourists, oil installations and US naval ships.

Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in October of 2000 that killed 17 US sailors on the USS Cole, a destroyer that was docked in the southern port of Aden.

In December of 2002, 3 US doctors were killed while another was seriously wounded in an attack by an extremist at a Baptist hospital in Jibla, located just south of Sanaa City.

Just last year, a soldier opened fire on oil workers of the Occidental Petroleum Corporation (US owned). The attack killed one worker and wounded six others, including the American supervisor at the installation.

Just this last January 19, two Belgian tourists (both female) were among four people killed in an attack by suspected al-Qaeda gunmen. Four other Belgians were wounded in the attack. The gunmen opened fire on the bus that the tourists were on. It happened in the eastern province of Hadramut.

In a separate attack, at least five Yemeni soldiers were injured after a bomb went off at a local government compound in the southern province of Abyan. The officials who were investigating the scene said it is possible that Islamic militants were behind the attack.

12 American Soldiers Dead In 3 Days

US Soldiers in Baghdad
Above: Two American soldiers patrolling Baghdad

Three American soldiers were the latest victims of recent attacks in Southern Iraq. The soldiers, who were at the Combat Outpost Adder near Nasiriya, were killed from a barrage of rockets that peppered their small base early morning Wednesday. Two other soldiers and a civilian were wounded in the attack. This brings the death toll to 12 in 3 days.

One American soldier died by a roadside bomb in his patrol near Diwaniya yesterday; eight died in a pair of bomb attacks the day before: three in Diyala and five in Central Baghdad.

According to the Associated Press, the total death toll of American soldiers in Iraq is now at 4,000.

The recent increase in attacks are believed to have been started by a call from Iraqi tribal leaders, former politicians and intellectuals for United Nations control in the region. The call for UN support will prove to be helpful in the cause of US troop reduction and their eventual departure from the country. In my opinion, these recent attacks are a show of force from the terrorists: to instill fear that the region is not safe for US and moreover UN forces.

“We believe that the only opportunity left for Iraq to be saved from a dark, but not inevitable future, is to engage the international community represented by the United Nations,” said the letter addressed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in Cairo. “Such a step will allow the American troops to leave and the occupation to be brought to its end.”

The letter made in the collective efforts of Iraqis under the leadership of Adeeb al-Jadir, Ahmed Al-Haboubi and Nouri Abdel Razak Hussein. These politicians were overthrown by Saddam Hussein in 1968. in 2003, when the Americans arrived, they were part of the liberal anti-regime opposition.

The UN pulled out in August of 2003 when a suicide attack targeting their group killed civilians and one of the UN representatives.

“Violence has increased dramatically over the past few days,” said a 33 year old father and civilian named Haitham Ismael of Western Baghdad.

Most civilians in Iraq have been living a comparatively “peaceful” life given the circumstances of the recent years. These recent attacks have thrown their hopes for a better situation out the window.

The people of Iraq are living in fear again. Memories of violence from a year ago are coming back in true form. And the promise of American troops leaving the region is not helping to calm their senses.

Many believe that their own government cannot control even the Shiite or Sunni militants, how much more the al Qaeda.

“I think militant groups, whether Shiite or Sunni, will not disappear,” said a 55 year old father and teacher named Naji Hassan Yassin, a Sunni. “They do this (disappear) only when there are troops on the street. But they will return when they leave. How long can we keep all these American troops on the ground?”

“I’m 100 percent certain that if the U.S. forces leave now, the situation will become very explosive,” said the teacher. He is currently residing in Amariyah with his family of three children. He fears that the al Qaeda will return to his hometown and once again take control of their lives.

Al Qaeda Bombs Crowded Baghdad Market

Karadah Bombing

Above: Al Qaeda’s bomb blast

A crowded, predominantly Shi’ite Baghdad shopping area was bombed twice by suspected al Qaeda on Thursday at around 7 in the evening.

The first attack, according to police, was a roadside bomb that was detonated on a street in the central Karadah district. The area was filled with vendors and their customers since Thursday is already weekend for Muslims. Women and children were among the more than 50 casualties; 120 plus more were injured.

The second attack, which came only a few minutes later, was detonated by a suicide bomber as people were making their way around in confusion and panic due to the earlier commotion. Compared to the initial blast, the subsequent bombing proved to be much more powerful.

Only three days ago, two bomb blasts in central and eastern Baghdad killed 19 people. A month ago, two women terrorists bombed populated Baghdad bird markets and killed more than 100 people. Below is a picture of one of the attacked bird market.

Below: After the explosion

Bird Market Bombing

“Terrorists of the al Qaeda network targeted innocent people again,” said Major-General Qassim Moussawi, spokesman for Iraqi security operations in Baghdad.

U.S. military officers and Iraqi officials both agree that this was the work of Sunni Islamist al Qaeda, the perpetrator for most large scale terrorist bombings.

Thursday was the same day that the U.S. military planned on withdrawing 2,000 troops from the city. This was part of the proposed reduction of U.S. troops by General David Petraeus, the U.S. military commander in Iraq. Since the arrival of the 30,000 soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, violence has dropped by 60 percent. The 2,000 troops will be coming from that same brigade.

The soldiers were brought to Iraq precisely for the purposing of quelling the sectarian violence between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims.

Conspiracy theorists believe that the attack was timed in absolute perfection – making way for a possible delay in the withdrawal of the 5 U.S. troop brigades from Baghdad. But a U.S. military spokesperson said that the troop reduction will continue as planned and all the 5 brigades will be out of Baghdad by July of this year.

Britain Involved in Rendition

Rendition Movie
Above: A scene from the movie “Rendition”

For years, people in the country have been contending the involvement of Britain in “rendition missions” of the United States. Today their fears were confirmed.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband told the House of Commons on Thursday that “contrary to earlier explicit assurances,” the Central Intelligence Agency had attested using the British island of Diego Garcia for refueling two American rendition flights in 2002.

Rendition is a handing over of a person from one jurisdiction to another – a common type of which is extradition where one country requests and obtains from another the surrender of a criminal. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, however, extreme rendition has allegedly been made by the United States (particularly the Central Intelligence Agency) on suspected terrorists. In such cases, it is believed that they transport suspects to countries like Egypt, Syria, and Uzbekistan – where they are “questioned” regarding terrorist attacks that they may or may not be involved with. Laws in these regions regarding questioning approve borderline torture. So in effect, the United States government is not liable for any kind of torture inflicted on their suspects.

The acknowledgment of the rendition flights contradicted previous United States assurances that no such flights had landed on British territory.

Controversial CIA Director General Michael Hayden (who earlier admitted to waterboarding al-Qaeda detainees) informed British officials that a recent review of agency records had shown that the agency committed an error in reporting to Britain previously that “there had been no rendition flights involving their soil or airspace” since the September 11 attacks.

“That information, supplied in good faith, turned out to be wrong,” the Director said. “This time, the examination revealed the two stops in Diego Garcia. The refueling, conducted more than five years ago, lasted just a short time. But it happened.”

“That we found this mistake ourselves, and that we brought it to the attention of the British government, in no way changes or excuses the reality that we were in the wrong. An important part of intelligence work, inherently urgent, complex and uncertain, is to take responsibility for errors and to learn from them. In this case, the result of a flawed records search, we have done so.”

Miliband said he had received a personal apology from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

“It is unfortunate that this was not known, and it was unfortunate it happened without us knowing that it had happened,” said Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He assured that Britain will start installing procedures to ensure that such a breach will not happen again.

Director Hayden said that neither of the two detainees transported in the said rendition flights “was ever part of the CIA’s high-value terrorist interrogation program.”

Bhutto Assassination Suspects in Custody

Benazir Bhutto Campaign

Above: Benazir Bhuto

Two suspects had already confessed Wednesday that they armed the suicide bomber that killed Benazir Bhutto. Hasnain Gul and Rafaqat were part of a team of five men who were behind the former prime minister’s assassination. Investigators named a certain Karamullah as one of the two remaining suspects who are still at large. The fifth member, of course, was the suicide bomber himself. They identified the bomber by two aliases, Saeed and Bilal.

Lead investigator Chaudhry Abdul Majeed said that these two were at the Rawalpindi Park where Bhutto was assassinated on December 27. They were waiting for her arrival from a campaign rally earlier (shown in the photo above) — where they originally planned to kill her. The two provided the bomber with a house, transportation, a pistol, and the suicide jacket he used in the attack that also killed nearly two dozen others.

In his report, Majeed said the two told police they picked up the bomber a day before the attack at a bus depot in Rawalpindi, and the bomber stayed overnight with Rafaqat before they took him to the Rawalpindi Park to plan for the attack. Afterwards they went to Hasnain Gul’s house to fit the bomber with the vest.

Pakistani authorities said Bilal fired a gun at Bhutto before detonating his bombs. According to the Scotland Yard, Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto died when the force of a bomb blast slammed her head into an escape hatch on her SUV, and not due to the gun shot.

Pakistan’s government has concluded that the former Prime Minister’s assassination was orchestrated by Baitullah Mesud, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban who has ties to al Qaeda. This has been corroborated by the CIA. A nationwide poll in Pakistan however revealed that a majority of Pakistanis believe that President Pervez Musharraf’s government was behind her killing.
